Obituary

Ernest A. Alix, 88, a long time resident of Windham, NH died January 18th surrounded by his loving family.

He was born in Spencer, MA on May 24, 1922, the son of Ernest F. Alix and Rosalma (LaChapelle) Alix, and brother to Ethel Dufault of Worcester, MA. He was predeceased by his brother Elmer C. Alix, formerly of Charlton, MA. Ernest worked on the family farm and was a WWII Army Veteran. He met his wife Lucette in Washington, D.C. and the two married on August 24, 1947 at Sacred Heart Church in Lawrence, MA. Ernest and Lucette raised 13 children at their home in Windham. Ernest was a devoted and wonderful husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and provider. He founded "Ernie's Garage" in Windham in 1949 and served as the owner, operator, and chief mechanic for forty-six years. Ernest was a gifted professional musician who shared his love of music with his family and brought hundreds of people much joy with his banjo playing. He served as an usher in his church, St. Matthew's in Windham, for forty years. He was a most hospitable man who kept his home open to visitors 24/7. He was an avid fisherman, and loved playing cards, hiking, and tree climbing. He was a hard working, honest, humble man with a quick wit, a beautiful work ethic, and a wonderful playful spirit. He was loved and respected by everyone.

Ernest is survived by his wife of 63 years, Marie Lucette F. (Brien) Alix, his 13 children, Ernest J. Alix and his wife Joyce of Derry, NH, Alfred Alix and his wife Moira of Windham, NH, Rosemarie Rinaldo and her husband David of Ocala, FL, Annemarie Campbell of Goffstown, NH, Theresa Paradis and her husband Glenn of Londonderry, NH, Joseph Alix of Windham, NH, Frank Alix and his wife Stephanie of Rye, NH, Albert Alix and his wife Jackie of Fremont, NH, Mary Dahlberg and her husband Michael of Weare, NH, Margaret Stuart and her husband Stephen of Derry, NH, Paul Alix and his wife Marcia of Londonderry, NH, Catherine St. Ledger and her husband Patrick of Derry, NH, Joyce McDonald and her husband John of Hampton, NH, and 41 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

Calling hours will be on Sunday January 23, 2011 from 2 to 6 pm at the Goundrey and Dewhirst Funeral Home, 42 Main Street, Salem, NH. A Funeral Mass will be held on Monday at 10:00 am at St. Matthew's Church, 2 Searles Road, Windham, NH. Burial will be at the Cemetery on the Plains, Windham, NH. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to NH Catholic Charities, 215 Myrtle Street, Manchester, NH 03104, www.nh-cc.org.
