Obituary

Mary Margaret Anderson, 92, died on January 11, 2011 in Sarasota, Florida after a brief illness. Born on June 8, 1918 to Mary C. (Tynan) and Samuel W. Donaghy, she was a resident of New Bedford since birth and more recently of Sarasota. She was the widow of James M. Anderson born in Needham, Mass.
Mary graduated from New Bedford High School in 1936 and Campbell’s Secretarial School. As a resident of New Bedford, she did volunteer work for the Whaling Museum, St. Luke’s Hospital, and was a member of the Friends of SMTI. Mary was a communicant of St. Julie Billiart Church in Dartmouth. She will be especially remembered for her zest for life and love of family.
Survivors include two daughters, Mary Louise Andrade of Sarasota, Florida, and Barbara Valliere of Clifton, Virginia; six grandchildren, Christopher Shumway, Caroline Noble, Jared, Jordan, Ashley and Brooke Valliere; and six great-grandchildren. Mary was preceded in death by her brother, Joseph Donaghy.
Visiting hours will be at the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park Street, New Bedford from 4 to 7 p.m. on Friday, January 21st. Her Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Julie Billiart Church in Dartmouth at 9:00 a.m. on January 22nd, followed by burial at St. Mary’s Cemetery.
