Obituary

Richard V. Kurka, 70, passed away at the Lawrence Memorial Hospital in Medford on January 14th, 2011. He was born on December 6th, 1940 in Manhattan, New York to his parents Richard and Caroline (Truax) Kurka. Richard was raised in Islip, New York and is a graduate of Islip High School, Class of 1959. He has been a resident of Malden and Medford for most of his adult life. Richard worked as a Typesetter for Lincoln Labs in Lexington for many years. He was an avid baseball player and fan who enjoyed coaching the National Little League in Malden. He was also a member of the Speakeasy Softball Club in Revere. He is survived by his wife, Michele (Ferreer)Kurka of Medford; by his children, Michael A. Kurka of Medford, James Kurka of California and Susan Kurka of Revere; by his brothers, Don Garrett of Long Island, New York and Stephen Kurka of New Port Richey, Florida; by his sister Barbara Kurka-Melendez of Port Richey, Florida and by his mother-in-law Margaret Ferreer of Somerville. Along with his parents, Richard was predeceased by his brother Harold Garrett. Relatives & friends are invited to attend visiting hours at the Breslin Funeral Home, 610 Pleasant St., Malden on Tuesday January 18th from 4-8 PM. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the American Cancer Society, 30 Speen St., Framingham, MA 01701.
