Obituary

WORCESTER: Daniel J. Flynn, 92, of Nelson Park Drive, died Monday, January 10, 2011 in the Rose Monahan Hospice Home at Coes Pond. His wife of 66 years, Claire R. (Smith) Flynn, died January 17, 2005.
He leaves a daughter, Mary C. "Nancy" Regan and her husband Edward Regan of Pittsfield; a sister Margaret Sherman of Millbury; six granddaughters, Colleen Wolfe of Charlton, Eileen Ledbetter of Woodbridge, VA, Deborah McCrady of Hudson, NH, Jennifer Griffith of Hopedale, Patricia Chuplis of Rutland, Karen Flynn of Attleboro; 12 great grandchildren; 6 great-great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Five brothers, three sisters, his son and daughter-in-law, Daniel J. Flynn, Jr. and Mary Jean (White) Flynn of Holden, all predeceased him. He was born and raised in Worcester, son of the late John M. and Mary (Friel) Flynn. He was a graduate of Sacred Heart Academy and attended Commerce High School. He was a Marines Corps Veteran of World War II serving in the Pacific. He participated in the battle to capture the island of Okinawa where he sustained injuries and was awarded a Purple Heart.
Dan was an inspector at Wyman-Gordon Company in Worcester where he worked for many years until retiring in 1984. After his retirement he worked part-time for St. Columba’s Parish in Paxton. He was a member of Immaculate Conception Church and the Chester P. Tuttle American Legion Post No. 279 in Auburn. He was an avid golfer, enjoyed spending time with his family, and vacationing at his summer home in Wells, Maine.
The family extends their most sincere gratitude to Dr. Berbara and his staff, Dr. McCarthy at the Jamaica Plain Campus of the Boston VA Healthcare System, the staff at Rose Monahan Hospice Home, as well as the ER and 4th floor staff at UMass Memorial Medical Center- University Campus, for their outstanding care and compassion.
CALLING HOURS will be from 5 to 8 p.m. on THURSDAY, JAN. 13, in KELLY FUNERAL HOME, 154 Lincoln St. A FUNERAL MASS will be held at 10 a.m. on FRIDAY, JAN. 14, in IMMACULATE CONCEPTION CHURCH, 353 Grove St., followed by burial in St. John's Cemetery. The family suggests donations in memory of Dan be made to Immaculate Conception Parish, 353 Grove St., Worcester, MA 01605 or the Rose Monahan Hospice Home, 10 Judith Rd., Worcester, MA 01602.
