Obituary

James Edwin Austin, age 83, of 965 Tunstall High Road, went to be with His Lord and Savior on Sunday, January 2, 2011 at his residence, after a decline in health for the past six months.

Born February 15, 1927 in Pelham, NC, he was the son of the late Robert Austin and Gladys Powell Austin. At age 17, he and his friend joined the Navy where he proudly served his country during World War II. He was married to Faye Jones Austin who predeceased him in December 2000. He co-owned and operated Austin Brothers Well Drilling and Austin Brothers Grocery. Mr. Austin was of the Baptist faith.

Survivors include three daughters: Cathy Austin Gibson of the Mount Cross Road, Lisa Austin Gibbs of the residence, and Wanda Austin Rushing of Texas; two sisters: Louise Wilcox and Frances Dill, both of Danville; three brothers: David Austin, Michael Austin, and Calvin Austin, all of Danville; three grandchildren, three great-grandchildren.

In addition to his parents and his wife, he was predeceased by his son, Roy Austin, five brothers, Charles Austin, Marvin Austin, Wallace Austin, Donald Austin, and Lindsey Austin.

Funeral services officiated by Rev. Gilbert Hawks and Rev. Tim Oakes will be held on Wednesday, January 5, 2011 at 2 p.m. in the Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will follow in Danville Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends on Tuesday, January 4, 2011 from 7 until 8:30 p.m. at the funeral home, and at other times, they will be at the residence of Cathy Gibson, 8329 Mount Cross Road.
