Obituary

AMPEL, Mollie Spiro, born Nov. 20, 1918, widow of Louis Ampel, formerly of Forest Hills NY, passed peacefully at Newton Wellesley Alzheimer’s Center at the age of 92 on Dec. 29, 2010. Survived by her sister Betty Spiro Sweet and husband Allen Sweet of Brookline, MA and sister Dr. Eve Jones Bonner of Los Angeles, CA.

Mollie is fondly remembered by her nieces Sheila Penelope Fischer of Vallejo, CA, Sarah Andree John of Church Falls, VA, Mary Jones of Ketchum, ID, Lynne Sweet Rezendes of Newton, MA and Susan Sweet Witkowski of Medford, MA and their families for her dutiful, generous, kind, loving, endearing, adventurous and brave spirit and most of all for her lively and loving role as AM, Aunt Mollie.

She was bold and brave; enrolling in the WAC’s before it even existed. She was very proud of being the "head children's clothing buyer" for the Bloomingdale's chain for many years in a day when women didn't hold such positions. She also proudly taught retailing to high school students in the NYC Public Schools and always encouraged "Buy American" and "look for the Union label". She spent her later years continuing her education by attending elder hostels all over the world and encouraging her nieces to be independent, keep learning and see the world. She especially enjoyed previewing movies, going to Broadway shows, showing her family New York and her favorite eateries, playing bridge and anagrams, teaching seniors how to exercise and sharing her love of all things chocolate. There will be a private memorial. In lieu of flowers donations can be made in her memory to the Massachusetts Alzheimer’s Association 311 Arsenal Street Watertown, MA 02472.
