Obituary

Donald O. “Don” Farrell, of Abington passed away December 26, 2010, after a period of failing health. He was the beloved husband of Helen (Giniewicz) Farrell for 63 years. Born January 10, 1917 in Whitman, he was the son of David and Elizabeth Farrell.

Don was raised and educated in Whitman, MA. He was a veteran of WWII having served with the 593 Army Air Corps from September 5, 1942 to his honorable discharge January 25, 1945. He served in the Algeria, Tunisian, and Rome-Arno Campaigns earning and a Good Conduct Medal and EAMET Campaign Ribbon with 3 Battle Stars.

Don was a route salesman in Abington and Whitman for the former Bond Bread Company serving as a shop steward with the Teamsters Union. He was later employed by the Abington Water Department where he was a founding member of the Abington Laborers Union. Don also served as a Call Firefighter for the town of Abington Fire Department.

He and his wife Helen enjoyed their many trips with their friends of the Abington Senior Citizen Association. He could be found working either in his yard or garden year round, regardless of the weather. Among many of his interests were the Red Sox, trips to Foxwoods, and indulging his sweet tooth.

He was a member of the Abington VFW Post 5737 and Abington American Legion Post 112.

He will be sadly missed by his family and friends with whom he spent much time.

He is survived by his wife Helen; his children Donna M. Donovan and her husband Kevin, David M. Farrell and his wife Carol, Linda A. Doiron and her husband William, Donald M. Farrell and his wife Catherine all of Abington. Also survived by his grandchildren Kelly, Brian, and Megan Farrell; William and Joseph Doiron; and Kaitlyn and Lauren Farrell. He will also be missed by his sisters-in-law, many nieces and nephews, and close family friends Paul and Linda Johnson of Weymouth. Predeceased by his brothers Albert, William, and James and his sisters Elsie Tebrich, Hazel Grover, and Gladys Grover.

His Funeral Services will be held Friday, December 31st at 11:00AM in the Blanchard Funeral Chapel Plymouth Street (Rt. 58 at the rotary) Whitman. Visiting hours will be Thursday, December 30th from 4-8 p.m. Burial will be at Mt. Vernon Cemetery in Abington.
