Shrewsbury- Philip John Mulcahy, 85, passed away on Saturday, December 25, 2010 at UMass Memorial Hospital. His beloved wife and sweetheart of 54 years, Merilyn G. (Anderson) Mulcahy predeceased him in 2002. He leaves a son, Philip L. Mulcahy and his wife Wendy; six daughters, Susan P. and Sandra L. Mulcahy with whom he lived, Sally A. Fontecchio and her husband Michael, Sheila J. Pustis, widow of John J. Pustis (d. 2009), Sharon R. Pustis and her husband Scott, and Shawn M. Lijoi and her husband Joseph, all of Shrewsbury; 12 grandchildren John Pustis and his wife Nicole, Christopher Pustis and his wife Ashley, and Daniel Pustis, Joseph and Thomas Fontecchio, Sara Mulcahy, Steven and Erin Mulcahy, Shannon and Scott Pustis, Andrew and Kaitlyn Lijoi: 1 great-granddaughter, Makenna Pustis; several nieces and nephews; and his beloved Maltese Tuffy. He was predeceased by an infant son, Stephen A. Mulcahy, his twin sister Katherine Phyllis Parrow, younger sister “Sis”, and a brother James Mulcahy.
Philip “Buddy” was born in Worcester, son of James and Catherine (Hickey) Mulcahy. He proudly served his country in the US Navy both in WWII and The Korean Conflict, serving on the U.S.S. Cimarron and earning a Silver Star and 4 Bronze Stars. He was the Superintendent of the Forge Department at Wyman Gordon Co. and worked there for over 40 years. He also worked for UPS for 17 years. He and his family owned and operated Sunset Beach Inc. on Lake Quinsigamond since 1947. He especially enjoyed hosting the Shrewsbury Parks and Recreation camp and many area day camps at the beach. Philip and his wife also designed and built a vacation house in York Beach, Maine, where he and his family enjoy spending time. He also enjoyed vacationing at Daytona Beach with family. Philip was very involved in his children and grandchildren’s lives and enjoyed attending many of their sporting events. He loved all of the family dogs and loved to spoil them. Philip led an exceptional life of selflessness, generosity, devotion to his family, courage, strength and the fortitude to always do what was right. He taught us many things but most of all how to love deeply and passionately. Philip touched many lives and he will be truly missed by all who knew him.
Calling hours will be held on Wednesday, December 29, 2010 from 5-8 p.m. in Nordgren Memorial Chapel 300 Lincoln St. Worc. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, December 30, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. in Salem Covenant Church, 215 East Mountain St. Worcester. Burial will follow in All Faiths Cemetery.
