Obituary

Joseph A. Aufiero, known as Uncle Joey to his many nieces and nephews died peacefully at the Winchester Nursing Home, Saturday. He was 91.

Joe was born and raised in Boston’s North End, the son of the late Saverio and the late Maria Grazia (Lepore) Aufiero. He served as a SeaBee with the Navy during World War II and participated in the battle of Guadalcanal. As a young man before the war he was part of the famed “Gallery Gods”, a group of Boston Bruins fans who religiously attended games at the Garden and followed the team around the country. A Medford resident for over 70 years, Joe worked as a truck driver and was a member of Teamsters Local 25. He kept up many friendships in the North End and was a member of the Saint Anthony Society and the Sulmona Club. He was a member of the Dante Club of Somerville and Post 1012 of the VFW in Medford. Uncle Joey loved his family and was devoted to his brothers, sisters and generations of nieces and nephews.

He is lovingly survived by three generations of nieces and nephews and is preceded in death by siblings: Anna Capodanno, Jenny Capodanno, Gloria Richard, Helen Aufiero, Albert Aufiero and Americo “Chickie” Aufiero.

His funeral will be from the Dello Russo Funeral Home, 306 Main St., Medford, Friday, December 17th at 9 AM followed by a funeral mass celebrated in St. Joseph Church, 118 High Street, Medford, at 10 AM. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend. Visiting Hours Thursday 4 - 8. Services will conclude with burial at Holy Cross Cemetery, Malden.
