Sabina (Gomes) Ramos, 92, of New Bedford passed away on Friday December 10, 2010 at New Bedford Health Care Center after a brief illness. She was the wife of the late Manuel Ramos.
A lifelong resident of New Bedford, she was the daughter of the late Marcelina Almeida Gomes and Antone Gomes. She was the last surviving sibling of the Gomes family and was predeceased by her sisters and brothers, Mary Ramos, Frank Gomes, Clara Beckett, Louis Gomes, and Antonio "Geech" Gomes.
Mrs. Ramos was the mother of Richard A. Ramos of Dartmouth and Marcia Ramos Williams and her husband Leonard of New Bedford. She was the aunt and "Matriarch" of the Gomes family which included her beloved nieces and nephews, Marcelina Lopes, Antone Ramos, Paul Gomes, Rev. Martin Gomes, Mary Louise Rodrigues, Linda Gomes, Thomas Gomes, Rev. Edmund Gomes, Stephen Gomes, Helen Ackah, Regina Jackson, Debbie Cruz, Kym Cruz, Barbara Andrade, Evelyn Glass, Anthony Gomes, Louis Gomes, Robert Gomes, Phyllis Corchado, Phillip Gomes, and Michael Gomes. She also leaves many great and great-great nieces and nephews, godchildren, and cousins.
She was the aunt of the late Rose Ramos, Evelyn Ramos, Manuel "Rusty" Ramos, James Gomes, Ann Gomes Oliveira, George "Jake" Gomes, and Wendy Fumo.
After graduating from New Bedford Vocational High School, she was employed by Aerovox Corporation for 30 years as a supervisor. After her retirement, she was a stay-at-home mother with her mentally disabled son and was an advocate for his care. She was a former member of the Board of Directors of Better Community Living, where her son resided, and also served on its Human Rights Committee.
Mrs. Ramos had a second retirement in 2008 from the Foster Grandparents program at the Alfred J. Gomes School. She was a "grandparent" to many kindergarten children during her 17 years in the program.
She was very active in her community and was a member of many clubs including the Cape Verdean Women's Auxiliary where she was a secretary, and the Cape Verdean Women's Social Club. She enjoyed many trips to Foxwoods, Newport, and Cape Cod as a member of the Retirees Club and the O.L.O.A. Seniors Club. She was a parishioner of Our Lady of the Assumption Church.
She loved Cape Verdean music and always could be found at the Cape Verdean Veterans Hall on Sundays with her best friend, Jenny Pimentel. She enjoyed her walks "downtown" and rode the bus all over New Bedford. She was loved by all who knew her and she will be missed.
Her Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Thursday at 9 AM at Our Lady of the Assumption Church. Burial will follow in St. John's Cemetery.
