Fall River – James A. Morency, 82, of Westport died unexpectedly at Charlton Memorial Hospital on December 22, 2003. He was husband of the late Florence M. (Tracy) Morency.
He was born in New Bedford son of the late Isadore and Mary A. (Hayes) Morency and resided in N. Dartmouth most of his life, living in Westport since 1985. He was a graduate of Holy Family High School in New Bedford, class of 1938. He was a communicant of St. John the Baptist Church, Westport. He was employed as a letter carrier by the New Bedford Post Office until his retirement in 1976.
Mr. Morency was a U.S. Army combat veteran of WW II with General George Patton’s 3rd Army. He was decorated with the Silver Star and Purple Heart and several other awards including the European-African & Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with 5 battle stars for service in Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland, Ardennes and Central Europe.
He served as a Catholic Charities Captain for his district while a member of St. George’s Church, Westport and also as Lay Chairman for the year 1967. He was a life member of Chapter 118 Disabled American Veterans of Westport, the Richard F. Howland Chapter National Guard Field Artillery Veteran’s Association and the Branch 18 National Association of Letter Carriers of New Bedford. He was a former member and treasurer of the Dartmouth Youth Activities Association, coaching and managing baseball and basketball teams. He loved sailing, gardening and walking his dog.
Survivors include 5 sons: Brian Morency of S. Dartmouth, John M. Morency of Wolfboro, NH, Daniel Morency of Onset, MA, James Morency of Minturn, CO and William Morency of Pittsfield, MA; a daughter: Susan A. Oliveira of S. Dartmouth; 10 grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren; and several nieces & nephews.
He was brother of the late Theresa Ratajack.

A Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 A.M. at St. John the Baptist Church, Westport.

Interment in Beech Grove Cemetery, Westport.
