Edward Patrick Gilmore age 80 of Canton passed away December 4th at the Milton Hospital. Originally from St. Ambrose Parish, Dorchester. He served as a Personelman Second Class during the Korean War, from 1951-1955. Commended by the Commanding Officer, U.S. Naval Training Station, Newport, R.I., on June 11, 1954. Commendation reads in part “You have shown sincere devotion to duty and exceptional Petty Officer qualities.” Awarded American Defense and Navy Good Conduct medals.
He enrolled at Boston College and worked at the United States Postal Office to support Elaine and children. He graduated Boston College in 1958 and was active at Boston College where he was a member of the Board of Directors, Boston College Alumni Association, Chairperson Class of 1958, Fides Society. He also served on the National Telethon and was Chairperson of Corporate Gifts for the Second Helping Program, a member of Pikes Peak Club and Hall of Fame Club. He was a Founding Member of the Boston College Club and received the John J. Griffin Sr. award as distinguished volunteer as Fides Class Agent at Boston College.
He worked as an Operations Manager at Sears in Kenmore Square, Boston as well as Regional Home Delivery Manager at Sears and was Past President of Sears New England Retirees, and a Member of the Sears Credit Union Board of Directors.
He was a Volunteer for Greater Boston Junior Achievement. Coordinator of the St. Gerard Majella Service Program and Ushers, Co-Chairperson of the St. Gerard Parish Council and a Member of St. Gerard Finance Committee.
He was also a member of the Father Flatley Council 2095 Knights of Columbus in Canton where he was the Treasurer of the Scholarship Fund and was named Canton Knights of Columbus Man of the Year in 2010 and received the Chevrus Award from Archdiocese of Boston. He was the Treasurer of St. John St. Vincent de Paul in Canton, a member of the Irish Cultural Society, Castle Island Association, Beatty American Legion Post #24 in Canton, a member of the Oysterville Yacht Club and the Director of Camp Gramp. & O.F.D.
Mr. Gilmore is survived by his wife Elaine Fogel Gilmore, and his daughters, Lynne Bimmler and her husband Kurt of Reading, MA, Kerry Gilmore Burke of Canton, MA, and Ellen Gilmore and her fiancé Ben Scollins, of Canton, MA. He is also survived by his siblings, Sister Catherine Gilmore, C.S.J, of Canton, MA, James M. Gilmore and his wife Elsie of Falmouth, MA, and Margaret Meissner and her husband, Francis, of Canton, MA.
Edward was the beloved grandfather of Elizabeth Wallace, Katherine and Paul Bimmler, Katie Burke and her husband Jared Porter, Patrick, Molly, and the late Brendan Burke.
Visiting hours at the Dockray & Thomas Funeral Home 455 Washington St. Canton Monday 2-4 & 7-9. Funeral mass at St. Gerard Majella Church Canton Tuesday morning at 11.
