Obituary

Frank U. Atkinson 87, of Franklin, died Friday November 26, 2010 at home. He was the husband of Irene M. (Cronin) Atkinson.
Born in Taunton, April 27, 1923 a son of the late Francis R. and Marion H. (Upham) Atkinson, he was a resident of Franklin for over 15 years and was a former longtime resident of Stoughton.
Mr. Atkinson was raised and educated in Hyde Park, and until his retirement worked as a letter carrier for the town of Stoughton for 32 years.
He honorably served in the United States Navy during WWII and attained the rank of Aviation Machinist’s Mate, Second Class; he was awarded the American Campaign Medal, the European African Middle Eastern Area Ribbon, the Good Conduct Medal & the World War II Victory Medal. He was discharged in February 1946.
His interests included fishing, reading, bowling, and crossword puzzles. He also treasured time spent with his family and grandchildren.
He was a member of the National Association of Letter Carriers, and the American Legion Post #89 in Stoughton.
In addition to his wife of 61 years, he is survived by 4 sons; Francis R. Atkinson of Wellesley, Joseph L. Atkinson of Wrentham, John F. Atkinson of Stoughton, & Stephen M. Atkinson of Norfolk, 2 daughters; Marie T. Kelleher of Franklin and Irene M. Atkinson of Stoughton, 2 brothers Edmund Atkinson of Braintree & Robert Atkinson of Carver. Also surviving are 11 grandchildren & 3 great grandchildren and many nieces & nephews.
He was the father of the late Christine M. Fitzgerald and brother of the late Francis, & John Atkinson, Faith King and Margaret Plowfield.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend his funeral Tuesday November 30th, at 9AM from the Charles F. Oteri & Son Franklin Funeral Home 33 Cottage St. Franklin, www.oterifuneralhome.com, with a funeral Mass in St. Jude Church 86 Main St. Norfolk, MA 02056 at 10AM.
Interment will follow at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, Stoughton.
Calling hours are Monday from 4-8PM.
