Obituary

Vito “Vic” Jiachetti

Augusta, GA – We mourn the passing of one of Augusta’s remaining WW2 veterans, Vic Jiachetti, who died on Sunday, November 21, 2010 at the V.A. Hospital. He served in the US Army 1st Division (the Big Red One) for the duration of the US involvement in the European theater, landing in North Africa in 1942 and continuing until after VE Day in 1945. Vic participated in most of the major campaigns - Morocco, Tunisia, Sicily, then withdrawn to England to prepare for D-Day where he landed on Omaha Beach. Vic fought in the Battle of the Bulge and went on to liberate concentration camps in Czechoslovakia, finally facing the Russians in Eastern Germany.

Born in 1920 in Elmsford, NY, to an immigrant-French mother and an immigrant-Italian father, Vic had many tales of hardship growing up in Brooklyn through the Great Depression. After the war, he returned to New Jersey, and then moved his family to central Florida in the early 60s. There, he worked as a Ford mechanic and workshop supervisor for 25 years.

In 1984 Vic and his wife, Labertice (Bert), relocated to Augusta. Although retired, Vic continued to be active, operating a mechanical repair service from his garage until just a few months ago. He has also provided motivational talks to young soldiers at Fort Gordon, giving insight to service in a war zone.

Vic and Bert have been active and valued members of Crossroads Fellowship Church, where she still sings in the choir. His warm greetings and sincere love will be sorely missed by the congregation.

Vic is survived by his wife Bert, a son (Donnie), a daughter (Louise Borutta), two stepsons (Gerald and Ronald Baygents), a stepdaughter (Irma-Jean Roberts), seven grand-children, and several great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, November 24, 2010 at 1:00 P.M. at Crossroads Fellowship with Rev. Chuck Peters officiating. Burial will follow at Bellevue Memorial Gardens.

The family will receive visitors Tuesday evening from 5:00 P.M. until 7:00 P.M. at Thomas Poteet & Son Funeral Directors, 214 Davis Rd., Augusta, GA 30907 (706) 364-8484. Please sign the guestbook at www.thomaspoteet.com
