Obituary

Henry Martin White Jr. of Mystic and Weekapaug, R.I., died peacefully at his home on Wednesday, Nov. 17, 2010, three weeks short of his 84th birthday on Dec. 7.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Joan (Andrew); his daughters, Elizabeth W. Drbal and Marjorie W. Shaffer and his son, Henry M. White III, their spouses; and seven loving grandchildren.

Known as a talented and accomplished amateur golfer, he used his talents and passion on the golf course to develop strong relationships that led to the initiation of many business agreements during his 45 years as a corporate banker. He spent 32 years at the Bank of New York rising to the position of senior vice president in their corporate lending division. Mr. White completed his career as a senior lending executive for Midlantic National Bank, retiring in 1992. He also served as a board member for the Unum Insurance Co., for over 12 years. He was an out spoken sports fan as his relentless love for hockey, football, and baseball never waned throughout his life. As a 1944 graduate of the Berkshire School, he was a celebrated athlete playing varsity hockey and being honored as the football and baseball team captain. He graduated from Yale University in 1950 after serving two years in the U.S. Naval Rreserve (RDM3) on the USS Midway in the Pacific. He was a devoted and avid alumni supporter to both schools. He could frequently be seen enthusiastically supporting Yale hockey and football in New Haven.

Born in Pittsfield, Mass., and the only child of Henry M. White and Lillian Wigglesworth, he lived for over 50 years in Mendham, N.J., where he served briefly on the board of education. He was a member of the Somerset Hills Golf Club in Bernardsville, N.J., where he twice was club champion. He was a member of several other golf clubs including the Weekapaug Golf Club. His spirited game and companionship on the golf course will be missed.

A memorial service is being planned for the early spring.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Berkshire School in Sheffield, Mass., Berkshire School, 245 North Undermountain Road, Sheffield MA 01257.
