Obituary

Anastos, Achilles T. of Hingham died peacefully at the age of 98 on November 7, 2010. He was born in Brookline Ma. in 1912 and was brought to Hull as an infant where his father operated businesses affiliated with Paragon Park.

Each winter beginning in 1925 his family traveled to Florida by auto where his father was involved in the produce market. They maintained a home in Miami Shores for many years.

He attended Hingham schools and the Boston Trade School and worked in the family businesses and the Hingham Shipyard before enlisting in the U.S. Navy in 1944. He and his brother Ernie both served on ships in the Pacific. Their Captains arranged a mid-ocean rendezvous for their ships so the brothers could meet.

“Killy” and his brother Ernie ran Anastos Variety and Hardware Store from 1946 until 1991 when their nephew took over the business. He retired from the store at the age of 92 in 2004. Killy was well known in Hull as a “go to” person. Both he and Ernie generously supported many organizations and community activities; from Sunset Camp to Hull schools’ theater and sports events and local charities.

For years Killy swam daily during the summer along Nantasket Beach from Anastos Corner to Hurley’s Bath House and back. He loved the ocean; especially fishing and boating with his family.

He was the devoted husband of Eleanor A.(Pompeo) Anastos for 59 years, the beloved father of David T. Donahue and his wife, Kathleen of Scituate and the treasured grandfather of Mark and his wife Margaret of Portland, Me., Suzanne of Charlestown and Alec of Easthampton. He took great delight in his great grandchildren, Eleanor, Alice and Miles of Portland, Me. He is also survived by his sister, Demetra Connor of Hingham and many close nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by brothers Ernest and Christus and sisters Elizabeth Cobb and Juliette Comano.

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend a memorial service celebrating Killy’s life which will be held at 11 A.M. on Friday, November 19, 2010 at St. Nicholas United Methodist Church in Hull Village.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Hull Public Schools for Student Activities, 180 Harborview Road, Hull, MA. 02045.
