D. Alec White, 84, of Fitzgerald, GA died Friday, November 12, 2010, at his residence.
A memorial service will be held at 3 P.M. Monday, November 15, 2010, at the Paulk Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Henry Cannington and Rev. Godfrey O’Rear officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 2 o’clock until the memorial service hour.
Mr. White was born August 24, 1926 in Fitzgerald, GA to the late Scott and Faye Kennedy White. He was a 1944 graduate of Fitzgerald High School. A U.S. Army veteran, serving in the Pacific during World War II, he was a member of the 11th Airborne Division of Paratroopers. He made several jumps in the Philippines. He was a member of he Army’s boxing team. Returning home, he attended Middle Georgia Teacher’s College in 1950. He was awarded his Master’s Degree from Mercer University in 1958. During his career in education, he served as Teacher/Principal at the Cotton Mill School and Principal of Lynwood School. Mr. White was named Teacher of the Year for Ben Hill County in 1956. He was a representative for American Book Company and a facilities consultant for the Georgia Department of Education. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church where he served as a deacon. He was a former member of the Fitzgerald Jaycees and the Elks Club.
Mr. White is survived by his wife, Betty M. White of Fitzgerald; sons and daughters-in-law: Tom “Dude” and Mary Jane White and Ken and Cathy White, all of Fitzgerald: Grandchildren: Alecia and Thomas Barrett, Allison White, Ben and Jana White and Jennifer and Brent Brown; 2 great grandchildren; Brothers and sister-in-law: Jerry and Sis White of Fitzgerald and Tom “Babe” and Caroline White of Moultrie, GA. Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother.
