TIERNEY Marie T. (Reilly) age 91 of West Roxbury passed away peacefully in her sleep, Nov. 10, 2010 at the Armenian Nursing Home in Jamaica Plain. Marie was the wife of the late James F. Tierney with whom she had celebrated 48 years of marriage. Marie was born in Lawrence, Ma. and was a graduate of St. Mary’s High School in Lawrence and Emmanuel College, Class of 1939. Marie continued to pursue her lifelong interest in botany and biology, receiving a Master’s Degree in Science from Boston University. Her science career began at Massachusetts General Hospital where she worked full time in the Histology Dept., commuting daily by train to her Lawrence home while raising her four children with her husband Jim. Marie then became a teacher in the Science Dept., at Tenney High School, Methuen, Ma. Subsequently Marie became a Professor of Science at Boston State where she headed the medical technology program and finally at the University of Massachusetts Boston. While in retirement she continued to enjoy horticulture and working on her daily crossword puzzles. Marie was also a faithful follower of local and national politics watching CNN and other news programs daily loving nothing better than to discuss those hot topics with family and friends. Marie is survived by her daughters Ann Latson, Julie Tierney and her husband Kenneth R. Plisner DDS, her sons Michael Tierney and his partner Marcelo Barbosa and the late Bill and his wife Catherine Tierney and granddaughter Kate Latson, sisters in law of Sister Marie Rose Julie, SND,and Barbara Tierney. Also survived by numerous nieces and nephews. A Funeral Mass of Celebration will be on Friday, Nov. 12th at 10 o’clock in St. Theresa Chapel, West Roxbury. Interment private. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations in Marie’s memory may be made to St. Anthony’s Shrine, 100 Arch St. Boston, Ma. 02110 c/o Fr. Barry Langley, OFM in support of the Franciscans and their pastoral work with those in need.
