Obituary

Alvaro O. "Bob" Valles, 87, of New Bedford died Tuesday November 9, 2010 at St. Luke's Hospital. He was the husband of Ana (Gonçalves) Valles.

Born in New Bedford, the son of the late John and Virginia (Oliveira) Valles, he lived in New Bedford and Dartmouth for many years. He retired to Florida in 1987, living in West Palm Beach, Port St. Lucie, and Pensacola, before returning to New Bedford in 2007.

Mr. Valles was formerly employed as a merchant seaman for the Steamship Authority, Esso Corp., and Moran Towing until his retirement in 1987.

During World War II, he served with the 5th Army in the Italian Theater.

Survivors include wife; three children, Randall Valles and his wife Deolinda of Pensacola, FL, Ricardo Valles and his wife Kimberly of Mattapoisett, and Melissa Valles of New Bedford; his siblings, Ilene Fernandes and Stella Pires, both of New Bedford, John Valles of Tiverton, RI, Walter Valles of Westminster, CA, Fernando Valles of Denver, CO, and William Pina of Holiday, FL; four grandchildren, Adam, Marcus, and Matthew Valles, and Miya Barboza; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

He was the brother of the late Benjamin Valles and Mary Santiago.

His Funeral Service will be held on Saturday at 9:30 AM at the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford. Burial will follow in Rural Cemetery. Visiting hours Friday 4-8 PM. For directions and guestbook, please visit www.saundersdwyer.com.
