Avid golfer and volunteer

Wolfeboro—Bertha Lillian Winnai Tyson, 99, passed away peacefully at the Forrestview Manor in Meredith, NH, on Friday October 22,2010 with her children and grandson by her side.

She was the youngest of seven children born to Jacob and Lillian Winnai of Germany and Philadelphia, PA. She was born in their Philadelphia home on May 1, 1911. All siblings have previously passed away.

Bertha was married to Joseph Gillmur Tyson of Norristown, PA, deceased, where they spent the first 40 years of their marriage in a 1760 farm house,, summering in Sandwich, NH , and then moved permanently to Wolfeboro in 1983.

In PA , Bertha was active in the garden club, volunteered as a hostess in the Valley Forge Museum, was a member of Questers, an antique club, rode horseback in the Perkiomen Fox Hunt Club. Was very active at the St. John’s Lutheran Church, and Church of the Messiah . Was a helper at the Quaker retirement facility, Foulkeways in Gwynedd Valley..

In Wolfeboro, she was very active at the All Saints Episcopal Church, helping in the Church fair, and faithfully in the thrift shop every week. She was a Hikers member, an avid bridge player, a golf member at the Waukewan Club, in charge of the indoor flowers at the Sandwich, NH Historical Society., and volunteered at the NH Craftsmen Shop in Sandwich. She was also a survivor of the 1942 Cocoanut Grove Fire in Boston, MA, someone rolled her up in a rug to put the fire out on her dress.!

Bertha leaves three children, Deborah Tyson Zimmerman and her husband Paul, of Tuftonboro, Joseph Gillmur Tyson,Jr. of Philadelphia, Peter J. Tyson of Charleston, S.C. and six grandchildren of CA, AK, SC, PA,Washington, D.C. and Manchester, NH. along with seven great grandchildren.

A service will be held on Saturday, October 30th,2010, 11:00 AM, at the All Saints Episcopal Church, South Main St. Wolfeboro, NH. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Life Ministries Food Pantry, 264 South Main Street Wolfeboro, NH.
