Obituary

Mabel Maria Herweg f Dedham, died peacefully at Highgate Manor on Sunday October 24, 2010.

Mabel was an active member of Dedham Civic Pride and devoted herself to the beautification of many public spaces throughout the town of Dedham. A significant contributor to the community, Mabel served as president of the Dedham Fairbanks Garden Club, New England Hosta Society and Ikebana International Boston Chapter. She was on the board of Directors for The Massachusetts Horticultural Society, National Council of State Garden Clubs, Inc. (New England Region), Garden Club Federation of Massachusetts (Metro East Director), Victorian Society of America, Dedham Historical Society (Vice President), New England Horticultural Resources Network, and Dedham Design Review Advisory Board. She was an active member in the New England Wildflower Society and Worcester Horticultural society. She started her studies of Ikebana, Japanese flower arranging, while living in Japan and earned master teaching degrees for the Ikenobo, Sogestu and Ohara flower schools and throughout her life taught and made presentations to Garden Clubs and other organizations. In addition to the above she served as Master Flower Show Judge for the Garden Club Federation of Massachusetts. She was a Trustee Emeritus of The Massachusetts Horticultural Society and was awarded an MHS Honorary Gold Medal for her lifelong contribution of outstanding service to the society. Mabel authored a chapter on flower arranging for ‘The Hosta Book” and contributed many gardening articles for Horticulture and other magazines. Mabel will always be remembered by a hosta named: H. “Mabel Maria Herweg.”

She was the beloved wife of 65 years to John Barton Herweg and the loving mother of John W. Herweg and his wife Liisa and a lifelong mentor and friend to Carol Kilroy.

Funeral from the George F. Doherty & Sons Wilson-Cannon Funeral Home, 456 High St. DEDHAM, Wednesday at 8 AM. Funeral Mass in St. Mary’s Church, Dedham, at 9 AM. Relatives and friends kindly invited. Visiting hours Tuesday 4-8 PM. There will be a private burial in Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, VA.
