Orvil E. Thompson, Sr., 85, of Fitzgerald, Georgia, died Wednesday, October 20, 2010 at Dorminy Medical Center.
Funeral services will be held 4:00 P.M. Saturday, October 23, at Arbor Baptist Church with Dr. Lloyd Stembridge and Rev. Barry Gordon officiating. Interment will follow in Evergreen Cemetery. Visitation will be held 6-9, Friday evening at the funeral home.
Born November 19, 1924 in Fitzgerald to the late William Reese and Lena Huling Thompson, he lived in Fitzgerald most of his life. Mr. Thompson served in the U.S. Army during WW II and the Korean War era and the Army National Guard with a total of over 20 years in military service. He was a member of the 385th AAA AW BN. A unit that served in France, Belgium, Holland and Germany and participated in the following battles and campaigns: Normandy, Northern France, Ardennes, Rhineland, Central Europe and the Battle of the Bulge. He was a former employee for the Mayport Naval Base, the Jacksonville Beach City Utilities and a former Electrical Mechanic for the Marine Corps Logistics Base in Albany. Mr. Thompson was an electrician and owner/operator of Thompson & Son Electrical, a former lineman for Fitzgerald Water, Light & Bond and was co-founder and former co-owner of Colony Cleaners. He was a member of Arbor Baptist Church.
He is survived by his daughters & sons-in-law: Sherry & Bill Seabrooke, Cumming and Susan & Derek Munroe, Fitzgerald; son & daughter-in-law: Chip & Beverly Thompson, Fitzgerald; grandchildren: Matthew Norris, Christopher (Cindy) Munroe, Duane (Jennifer) Munroe, Wendy (Steven) Herod, Skip Seabrooke, Michael Seabrooke, Trey (Jessica) Thompson and Buck (Heather) Thompson; 7 great grandchildren as well as several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 63 years, Annette Hardin Thompson, a daughter, Jill Thompson Norris Ryan, 6 brothers and 1 sister.
