Obituary

Phyllis Flaggs Anchors of River Road, Pawcatuck, went to eternal rest on October 11, 2010 at the Westerly R.I. Hospital.

The fourth of five children, Phyllis was born in Baltimore, MD, in 1934 to Edgar and Margaret (Ludwig) Flaggs.

Growing up during WW2, she was very patriotic, worked for the Coast Guard in Curtis Bay, MD, and later supported the Navy by working at Sup Ships and the Underwater Sound Lab/NUSC/NUWC.

Beginning her career as a clerk/typist, Phyllis earned her Bachelor’s Degree from Charter Oak College. She became a Computer Specialist and the Project Head for Configuration Management. She retired from NUWC in 1996.

Phyllis was married to Gerald G. Anchors, Retired CG, from 1955 to 1969. They had twin sons, Jerry and Mark, and 3 years later son, Brad.

A champion of women’s rights, Phyllis participated in the Women’s Health Initiative at Rhode Island hospital. She volunteered at the Mystic/Noank Library, belonged to their writers’ group and authored books. She was an active member of the Stonington Democratic Town Committee.

Phyllis loved to travel. Her many trips included the Great Wall of China, Russia, and the Holy Land.

She is survived by her sons, 3 grandchildren, and 3 great-grandchildren, as well as her sister, Rosalind Flaggs of Maryland, and many nieces and nephews.

Phyllis was a loving and caring mother, with a kind heart, whose support and friendship will be greatly missed.

Her family will greet relatives and friends at The Dinoto Funeral Home, 17 Pearl St. Historic Downtown Mystic on Thursday morning at 10 am and will proceed to a noon funeral service at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Mystic. Burial in Maryland will be private for the family.
