John T. O'Halloran, a retired Boston Firefighter and lifelong resident of Charlestown, died on Thursday, October 7, 2010 at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston after an extended illness. He was 91 years old.
John was born in Boston and grew up in Charlestown, where he attended Boston Public Schools and graduated from Charlestown High School in 1937. He enlisted into the United States Army in 1943 and served his country during World War ll. He was discharged in 1946 with the rank of Tech/4. John joined the Boston Fire Department in 1948 and was assigned to Engine Company # 36 in Charlestown and served until he was injured while fighting a fire in 1961. He later worked as a maintenance man at The Chelsea Naval Hospital for 15 years and also became a member of The International Longshoreman's Association Union Local # 799. His final occupation was working as a Maintenance Supervisor at the United States Coast Guard Station in Boston for 10 years. John was a member of Bunker Hill Post # 26, American Legion, Bunker Hill Council # 62, Knights of Columbus and The Old Charlestown Schoolboys Association.
John is the beloved husband of 62 years to Joan (Woodman) O'Halloran. He is the devoted father of Donna O'Leary and her husband Robert, John O'Halloran and his wife Jean and Kevin O'Halloran and his wife Laurie. He is the loving grandfather of Katie, Bonnie, Meaghan, Bridget, Molly, Shaun, Hannah and the late Kerry and his 4 great-grandchildren. He is the beloved brother of Mary the late William, James, Edward and Francis O'Halloran. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend John's Funeral on Tuesday morning, October 12, 2010 at 9 a.m. from The Carr Funeral Home, 220 Bunker Hill St. Charlestown followed by his Funeral Mass in St. Francis De Sales Church, 313 Bunker Hill St. Charlestown at 10 a.m. Interment at The Veterans Administration National Cemetery, Bourne at 1:15 p.m. Visiting hours will be on Monday, October 11, 2010 from 4 to 8 p.m.
