Robert C. Verkade, 71, of Mattapoisett passed away, October 2, 2010 at Tufts Medical Center surrounded by his loving family. He died from complications of multiple myeloma. He was the beloved husband of Kathleen T. (Main) Verkade. They shared forty-eight wonderful years together.
Born in Hyannis, Massachusetts, the son of Klass and Annigje (VanEyk) Verkade, he was raised in Osterville, Ma. and has resided in Mattapoisett for the past 47 years.
Mr. Verkade attended Northeastern University as a civil engineering major. He became a Registered Professional Engineer and a Registered Land Surveyor. After serving eight years with the United States Coast Guard Reserves, he was honorably discharged in 1969.
He was a Vice President, a Chief Engineer, a principal, and a director of Tibbetts Engineering Corp.
He enjoyed boating, gardening, traveling, and spending time with his family. He had many talents and used them to help everyone.
Survivors include a daughter, Cheryl A. Moniz, and a son, Timothy C. Verkade, both of Mattapoisett; a grandson, Christopher S. Moniz. He is also survived by two sisters, Jeanette Duarte and Anne Stucke; a brother, Charles Verkade, and several nieces and nephews.
