Obituary

ROBERT B. THOMAS, SR. of Hingham, passed away at the South Shore Hospital in Weymouth on Friday, October 1st, 2010. He was 91. Mr. Thomas was born in Norfolk, Virginia and came to Hingham at the age of 4. He was educated at Thayer Academy in Braintree, Class of 1937 and attended Williams College in Williamstown, MA. He then served with the United States Navy during World War II as a Chief Quartermaster on the minelaying ship, USS Monadnock. After his military service he was a salesman for the Waltham office of Kaiser Aluminum Foil and then for William B. Canterbury Yacht Sales on the South Shore. Mr. Thomas was the longest standing member of the Hingham Yacht Club, a member of the Mass. Charitable Society, a Red Cross volunteer and an active member of the ROMEOS (Retired Old Men Eating Out).

Husband of the late Marcia (Strobridge) Thomas, he was the father of Virginia T. Sawin of Shrewsbury, Robert B. Thomas, Jr. of Falling Waters, W.VA, Malcolm B. Thomas of Albany, NH and Richard R. Thomas of Wiscasset, ME. Brother of Richard C. Thomas of Fernandina, FL and the late John R. Thomas. Also survived by 9 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren.

A Memorial Service will be conducted on Tuesday, Oct. 12th at 11 AM at the Old Ship Church, 90 Main St., Hingham. Visiting hours and flowers omitted by request. In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the Norwell VNA & Hospice, 91 Longwater Circle, Norwell, MA 01061. The interment is private.
