O’Hara, John C. 91 of Walpole, formerly of Canton died peacefully September 28, 2010 at his home at New Pond Village. He was the beloved husband of Helen (Winslow) Flaherty/Schnetzer of Canton and of Rita (Corrigan) of Hyannis who predeceased him after more than 53 years of marriage. A graduate of Boston Latin School and Boston College, he served in the United States Army during World War II. He returned to Boston College to study law and received his degree in 1946. After working as an attorney for the Veteran’s Administration, he spent the bulk of his career as a procurement contract attorney for the United States Air Force. A devout Catholic, John relished his time spent as a member of the Catholic Alumni Sodality of Boston. As a longtime resident of Canton, he was active in helping plan and shape Canton’s growth during the 60’s and 70’s, primarily as part of the Industrial Development Commission. He was a founding parishioner at Saint Gerard Magella Roman Catholic Church and a decades long member of Ponkapoag Golf Course. He loved laughter, song, and a healthy provocative conversation. His grandchildren were his delight.
He is survived by his children: John & Cyndy O’Hara of Chapel Hill, North Carolina, Stephen & Jude O’Hara of Westwood, Anne & Kevin Johnson of Oak Bluffs, and Jane & Michael Chappelle of Melbourne, Florida and his grandchildren: John & Erin O’Hara of San Francisco, CA, Emily O’Hara of New York, NY, Stephen & Timothy O’Hara of Westwood, James & Katie Johnson of Oak Bluffs, and Brian, Thomas, & Daniel Chappelle of Melbourne, FL. He also leaves behind two sisters, Eleanor Lawler of Westborough and Terese Curley of Hyannis. His sisters, Esther and Mary; his daughter Mary Bridget; and his grandson, Kevin Johnson, predeceased him.
Funeral from the Holden Dunn & Lawler Funeral Home, 55 High Rock St. (off Route 109) WESTWOOD on Friday at 8:00 AM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday October 1, at 9:00 am in St. Timothy’s Church in Norwood. Relatives and friends are invited.
Visiting hours in the funeral home on Thursday from 6:00 to 8:00 PM.
Internment Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne will be private.
