Obituary

Westport - Milicent (Ewell) Tuckerman, 94, of Westport died in her sleep at home on December 1, 2003. She was the widow of Bayard Tuckerman, Jr.

She was born in Worcester, MA daughter of the late Arthur W. and Jane (Estabrook) Ewell and resided in Westport most of her life. She attended Miss Hall’s School in Pittsfield, MA and graduated from the Mary C. Wheeler School in Providence, RI. Her father, Arthur Woolsey Ewell was an internationally known physics professor at Worcester Polytech Institute, Worcester, MA.

Mrs. Tuckerman was a distinguished horticulturalist, an avid sportswoman and a very successful breeder of thoroughbred horses. She was an active member of the National Herb Society of America, the New England Unit, the Garden Club of Buzzards Bay, the Garden Club of America, the Colonial Dames of America, the Boston Athenaeum and both the Chilton and Somerset Clubs. One of her greatest pleasures and an enduring passion was working in her garden.

For years she was an active and enthusiastic beagler. Milicent was joint Master of the Waldingfield Beagles, the oldest registered pack of hunting beagles in the United States. She also held the woman’s record for tuna caught with rod & reel for many years.

Among Milicent’s greatest accomplishments was being recognized as New England Thoroughbred breeder of the Year for three years with “Rise Jim”, who held the record as the highest winning horse in New England for many years. However, she will be most remembered by her family and many friends as an extraordinary raconteur who had a sharp wit and a mischievous sense of humor. She was an avid reader, a great traveler and had an intense curiosity about life and people in spite of what she considered her innate shyness.
