Obituary

New Bedford – Harry A. Lowe, Sr., 76, of New Bedford died peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family on December 1, 2003 after a brief illness. He was the husband of Rita T. (Jordan) Lowe; they were married for 59 years.

He was born in New Bedford son of the late Harry P. and Alice M. (Knight) Lowe and resided in the greater New Bedford area all of his life. He was a member of the First Congregational Church at Lunds Corner, New Bedford. He was employed as a fish cutter by the former J.B. Filet Company, New Bedford until his retirement in 1988 and was recognized by the Standard-Times as the “Best fish cutter in the New Bedford area”.

Mr. Lowe was a U.S. Army veteran of WW II. He was a member of the Andrews-Dahill Post 1531 V.F.W., New Bedford and the Sixth Bristol Club, New Bedford. He was an avid Boston Red Sox and N.E. Patriots fan. He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren; raising the American flag in his front yard; shooting pool; playing cards; gardening; and sitting on his front porch watching the world go by. He loved poetry and was an avid cook who donated his time to charitable organizations.

In addition to his wife he is survived by 3 daughters: Barbara A. Lowe-Mazaheri of New Bedford, Brenda J. Silva and her companion Joseph Quirk II of Fairhaven and Patricia E. McAfee and her husband Charles, Jr. “Chick” of E. Freetown; 2 sons: Harry A. Lowe, Jr. and his wife Pamela of New Bedford and Michael R. Lowe and his wife Tracie of Saco, ME; 4 brothers: Carleton A. Lowe of Delray Beach, FL, Stanley A. Lowe of NC, Albert W. Lowe of S. Dartmouth and Samuel R. Lowe of NH; 3 sisters: Violet J. Lowe of N. Dartmouth, Alice J. Lowe of ME and Ruth A. “Peggy” Santos of Hyannis; 14 grandchildren: Suzanne Proulx, L. Shireen Silva, Kimberly Sivil, Michael Silva, Mark Silva, Richard Macedo, Michelle Gonsalves, Christine Hartman, Meghan Kelley, Elizabeth Lowe, Katherine Lowe, Erika Lowe, Bethany Lowe and Alex Lowe; 8 great-grandchildren; and many nieces & nephews.

He was brother of the late Beatrice F. Hopwood, Donald P. Lowe and Philip C. Lowe; and grandfather of the late Christopher Mazaheri.

Calling hours Wednesday, Decmeber 3, 2003, 5-8 P.M. at the KIRBY FUNERAL HOME, 61 Tarkiln Hill Road, New Bedford.

Funeral service on Thursday, December 4,2003 at 10:00 A.M. at the First Congregational Church at Lunds Corner, New Bedford.

In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, 1115 w. Chestnut St., Suite 301, Brockton, MA 02401.

Interment in Rural Cemetery, New Bedford.
