George Edward Johnson passed away peacefully on Thursday, September 16, 2010. Born in Johnsonburg, PA on March 11, 1929, he was the son of the late Harry and Ida Johnson. George and his loving wife, Judy Gail English, were married on August 15, 1959 in Corning, NY.
George served in the Navy Seabees from 1948 – 1952. After leaving the military, he was employed by Corning Glass, Inc. in 1952. After a lengthy career as a senior equipment engineer with Corning Glass, he retired in 1991. He was an avid fisherman and hunter.
After retirement, he enjoyed his family, friends, and his beloved companion, Kassie, who has been by his side for 12 years. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge of Johnsonburg, PA and Ascension Lutheran Church in Danville, VA.
He is survived by his loving wife of 51 years, Judy Johnson of Danville, VA; daughters Christine Keatley (Wes Agee) of Danville, VA, Margie Riggan (Jesse) of Durham, NC, Debra Hinton (Jimmy) of Dry fork, VA; grandchildren Rebecca Leen (Sean) of Pinehurst, NC, Michael Keatley of Raleigh, NC, Alex and Courtney Riggan of Durham, NC, and Jessica Hinton of Dry Fork, VA; a brother, Donald Armstrong (Mary) of Williamsport, PA, and a sister, Ruth Burkholder (Jack) of Williamsport, PA. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Harold Arnstrong of Johnsonburg, PA.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, September 25, 2010 at 1:00 p.m. at the Ascension Lutheran Church, officiated by Pastor Richard Fritz. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Danville Life Saving and First Aid Crew, Inc., 2020 Christopher Lane, Danville, VA 24541, or the Danville Human Society, P. O. Box 3352, Danville, VA 24543, would be appreciated.
