Obituary

GLOUCESTER: John E. “Doc” Enos, Jr., 79, retired Gloucester Times journalist, died Sunday, September 5, 2010 in the Addison Gilbert Hospital following an extended illness. He was the husband of Joan E. (Abrahamsen) Enos.
Born in Gloucester on April 6, 1931, he was the son of the late John E., Sr. and Grace M. (McDonnell) Enos. A resident of Gloucester for most of his life, he was a graduate of Gloucester High School class of 1949, where he is a member of the Athletic Hall of Fame. He was also a graduate of the University of Massachusetts class of 1958, where as a member of the football team he held the record for over thirty years for the longest kickoff return. He was also a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War.
“Doc” worked as a City Reporter for the Gloucester Daily Times for forty years before his retirement in 2003. He had also once worked as the Sports Information Director for the University of New Hampshire for several years. Active in youth sports, he was known for calling low strikes as an umpire for the Gloucester Little League and had coached youth hockey in Gloucester. He also played in the Sunday Morning Softball League for many years. The Newell Stadium Press Box is named in his honor.
He had also authored two books, “Nate” and “100 Years of Fisherman Football.”
In addition to his wife of fifty-two years, he is survived by three daughters, Mary-Alice and her husband, Philip Curcuru, III and Grace E. Lopes all of Gloucester and Ann-Marie and her husband, Stuart Barnum of Manteca, CA; a son, David R. and his wife, Hope Enos of Rockport; seventeen grandchildren, Nick and his wife, Marissa Curcuru, Lisa, Kristen, Philip, IV and John Curcuru, Marie, Kevin, Jr., Jeffrey and Jason Lopes, Alyssa and Andrea Stubbs and Sarah, Charity, Harmony, Ryder, John “Jack” and Journey Enos; a sister, Patricia Davison of Gloucester; a sister-in-law, Jean and her husband, Robert Muniz of Gloucester and many nieces and nephews. He was also predeceased by three sisters, Dorothy Martin, Grace L’heureux and Geraldine Mitchell.
His funeral Mass will be celebrated on Thursday in Our Lady of Good Voyage Church, Prospect St., Gloucester at 9:30 a.m. Visiting hours will be held on Wednesday in the Pike-Grondin Funeral Home, 61 Middle Street, Gloucester from 4 – 7 p.m. Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in his memory to the Newell Stadium Fund, c/o Gloucester Fisherman Athletic Assoc., P. O. Box 3010, Gloucester, MA 01931 or to the VNACare Hospice, 8 Angle St., Gloucester, MA 01930. Interment will be held in the Calvary Cemetery, Gloucester.
