Obituary

Boylston – George C. Nicholas, 98, of Boylston, passed away Thursday, September 2 at home surrounded by his family.

Mr. Nicholas is survived by his wife of 60 years Mary (Grecho) Nicholas; a son Richard G. Nicholas of Boylston; a daughter Dorothy Stockmal and her husband Jonathan of Worcester; a granddaughter Sandra Emerson and her husband Alex of Paxton and a great granddaughter Avery Emerson; 2 nephews and a niece. He is predeceased by his brothers Andrew, Peter and Nisi and his sister Antigoni.

George was born in Polena, Albania, son of Christo and Athina (Argur) Nicholas, and immigrated to the United States through Ellis Island in 1932. George worked at Andrew’s Food Store before attending technical school to become a machinist. His machine work during World War II help lead the U.S. to victory in the Atlantic Theater. He was an innovative thinker and inventor who held several U.S. patents. He was a past member of the Venture Forum at Worcester Polytechnic Institute.

George worked as a machinist for the Cincinnati Milacron-Heald Corporation in Worcester for over 20 years retiring in 1977. He was a member of St. Mary’s Assumption Albanian Orthodox Church and the Son’s of St. Mary.

George was a member of the National Geographic Society for over 70 years. He was self-educated, enjoyed being a sportsman, gardening, playing cards, being outside and was most happy spending time with his family. He will be greatly missed and remembered as a loving husband, father, and grandfather.

The funeral will be held on Thursday, September 9 from the Alfred Roy & Sons Funeral Home, 12 Hammond St., Worcester with a funeral service at 10 AM at St. Mary’s Assumption Albanian Orthodox Church, 535 Salisbury St., Worcester. Burial will follow at Hope Cemetery, Worcester. Calling hours are on Wednesday, September 8 from 5 to 8 PM in the funeral home with a Trisagion Service at 6 PM during the calling hours. Flowers may be sent or memorial contributions may be made to a charity of ones choice.
