Obituary

Germaine C. Ferreira, 90, of Dartmouth died Wednesday September 1, 2010 at Hathaway Manor Extended Care Facility.

Born on Nantucket, the daughter of the late Antone S. and Mary J. (Sousa) Ferreira, she lived in New Bedford for several years before moving to Dartmouth in 1961.

She was a communicant of St. Francis of Assisi Church, where she formerly was a lector, Eucharistic minister, and member of the Women's League.

Miss Ferreira was a graduate of Nantucket High School and attended Kinyon's Commercial School. She began her career in banking at the Safe Deposit National Bank which later merged with the First National Bank of New Bedford. She completed several American Institute of Banking courses and was appointed the first woman officer of the First National Bank in 1973. She retired as secured loan officer and credit department manager.

She was a member of the Ivy Circle of New Bedford and served as president in 1960. She was a member of the St. Luke's Hospital Auxiliary and volunteered in admitting and discharge services. She later served as a Eucharistic minister in the hospital's pastoral care department.

Survivors include two sisters, Olive W. Figueiredo of New Bedford and Natalie B. Ferreira of Dartmouth; and several nieces, nephews, grandnieces and nephews, and great-grandnieces and nephews.

She was the sister of the late Mary J. (Vinho) Simms, Gloria Desrocher, Charles J. Ferreira, and Joseph L. Ferreira.

Her Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Tuesday at 10 AM at St. Francis of Assisi Church. Burial will follow in St. John's Cemetery. Visiting hours will be on Monday from 4-7 PM at the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford.
