BROCKTON – Edward A. Oliveira, husband of the late Gail M. (Medas) Oliveira, died at the Caritas Good Samaritan Medical Center on Aug. 25, 2010.
He was 86.
Born and raised in Fall River, he was the son of the late Francisco and Clara (Afonso) Oliveira.
After graduating from Durfee High School in 1941, Mr. Oliveira attended Providence College, later receiving philosophical and theological training at St. Mary’s Seminary in Baltimore, MD.
He was ordained to the Catholic priesthood in 1947, and began serving as Assistant Pastor at the former Our Lady of Lourdes Parish in Taunton. He was appointed Pastor in 1967.
He left the priesthood in 1970, and was subsequently employed as a social worker for the Commonwealth of MA, serving in several MA area communities, most recently with the Taunton Long Term Care Unit.
He retired July of 1992.
A longtime Brockton area resident, he was a communicant of St. Ann Church in W. Bridgewater.
Mr. Oliveira was an avid reader and history buff, enjoyed traveling, spending time with his family and was able to speak in several different languages.
He enjoyed home improvement projects.
Survivors include two sons, Edward A. Oliveira and his wife Jennifer of E. Taunton and Mark F. Oliveira and his wife Gina of Taunton; a grandson, Joshua E. Oliveira of E. Taunton; a sister, Theresa Nientimp of Fall River; and many nieces and nephews.
His funeral will be held from the Silva Funeral Home, 80 Broadway on Monday, Aug. 30th at 9 a.m. followed by a funeral mass at St. Ann Church, Raynham at 10 a.m.
Burial will be at St. Joseph Cemetery, Taunton.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend.
Calling Hours will be held at the funeral home on Sunday, Aug. 29th from 4 to 7 p.m.
