Obituary

Avis L. (Gurney) (Jones) Tripp age 75 of Brockton died Saturday August 21, 2010 at the Good Samaritan Medical Center following a brief illness. Born and raised in Brockton, she was a daughter of the late Howard S. and Olive M. (Pierce) Gurney. Avis remained a lifelong resident of the city and was a 1954 Brockton High School graduate. For many years Avis worked in the Brockton area shoe industry and retired as an inspector from Knapp Shoe.
Playing Bingo was Avis’ life passion. She was a regular player at St. Patrick and St. Margaret Churches, the Mary Kennedy Senior Center and the Belair Street High Rise. She was also a member of the Sweet Adeleines and the Red Hat Society. Avis will be remembered as a caring woman who would help anyone and was most proud of her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Avis is survived by her eight children Ronald L. Jones and his wife Jean of Taunton; Brenda A. Benjamin and her husband Richard of Lakeville; Deborah L. McGoff and her husband Timothy of Norwood; Bruce J. Jones and his partner Jacquelyn of Brockton; Linda J. Cribben wife of the late Ken of W. Bridgewater; Vickie L. LeRoy and her husband James of Westmoreland, NH; Karl A. Tripp and his partner Michelle of Brockton and Patty M. Tripp and her partner Harry of W. Bridgewater. She was the sister of Janet Welch and her husband Tom of Arizona; Darrelyn Foster and her husband Edward of Florida; Robert Gurney and his wife Donna of Mansfield and Sanford Gurney and his wife Anne of Hanson. She also leaves 19 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Visiting hours are in the Conley Funeral Home 138 Belmont St. (Rte 123) Brockton Sunday, August 29, 11-2 pm with a prayer service at 1:30 pm. Burial will be private. Donations in Avis’ memory may be made to The Charity Guild PO Box 2372, Brockton, MA 02305.
