Loren L. Purvis, Sr., 90, of Ocilla died Thursday, August 19, 2010, at his residence.
Funeral services will be held at 2 PM, Sunday, August 22 at the Ocilla Baptist Church with Rev. Rob Dowdle officiating, grandson, Loren Lamar Purvis, III will deliver a eulogy. Interment will follow in the Brushy Creek Cemetery, Irwin County. The family will receive friends from 7-9 Saturday evening at the funeral home in Ocilla.
Mr. Purvis was born March 4, 1920 in Irwin County to the late Malloy C. Purvis and Mildred Griner Purvis Shiver. He was raised by his mother and step-father, A.G. Shiver. He was a graduate of Gordon Military College in Barnesville. Mr. Purvis was a World War II veteran, having served four and a half years in the U.S. Army Air Corps from 1941-1946. He was a member of the U.S. Far East Air Force and was stationed on Manila in the Philippines where he was an inspector. Mr. Purvis was a farmer and retired owner-operator of Irwin County Livestock. He was a Mason and a Shriner having been a charter member of Hasan Temple in Albany. He was a former member of the Georgia Cattlemen’s Association, the Polled Herford Association, and the Ocilla Lions Club. Mr. Purvis was a trustee of Irwin Academy and had served on the Foundation Board for the former Ben Hill-Irwin Tech and East Central Technical College. He was the oldest member of the Ocilla Rotary Club, a member and deacon of Ocilla Baptist Church, and a member of the Steadfast Seekers Sunday school class.
Mr. Purvis is survived by his wife: Emily Ann Groover Purvis of Ocilla; daughter: Jan Purvis Dorminy and husband A.B.C. (Chip), III of Fitzgerald; son: L. Lamar Purvis, Jr. and wife Tammi of Ocilla; grandchildren: Heather Dorminy Poe and husband Preston, and A.B.C. (Art) Dorminy, IV and wife LeAnne, all of Fitzgerald, Valerie Purvis Veal and husband Kyle of Atlanta, and Loren L. Purvis, III of Ocilla; great-grandchildren: Wyatt Poe, Davis Hames, A.B.C. (Bradford) Dorminy, V, Abigail Poe, and Mitchell Dorminy.
