Obituary

Smith Aubrey Fowler, age 83, of 50 Fairfield Avenue, Danville, died Tuesday, August 17, 2010 in Danville Regional Medical Center. He had been in declining health for the past three years.

Born June 15, 1927 in Pelham, NC., he was the son of the late Clayton A. Fowler, Sr. and Esther Smith Fowler. He graduated from Schoolfield High School in 1948, served in the US Navy, and worked for Dan River Mills for thirty-five years. Mr. Fowler was a member of Schoolfield Methodist Church where he served as an usher and sang in the choir. He was also a member of the American Legion Post 1097 and the VFW Post 647.

Survivors include one sister: Ruby F. Martin of Danville; a number of nieces and nephews, including one special niece, Sandra Gammon and her husband Clifton of Danville. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by five brothers: Marvin Fowler, Curtis Fowler, Herman Fowler, Alvin Fowler, and Cecil Fowler, and by three sisters: Gladys Burnette, Christine Fowler, and Argene Jones.

Funeral services conducted by Rev. Susan Hannah and Rev. Mark Wimmer will be held on Thursday, August 19, 2010 at 2 p.m. from the Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel. Interment, with graveside military rites by the American Legion Post 1097 Honor Guard, will follow in Schoolfield Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour prior to the service and at other times they will be at the residence of his sister, 1418 Blair Loop Road, Danville.
