H. Merle Young, 94

H. Merle Young, 94, a lifelong resident of Mansfield passed away on Monday August 16, 2010 at the Sturdy Memorial Hospital in Attleboro. He was the beloved husband of the late Etta L. (Wellman) Young who died on December 12, 1993.
Born in Mansfield, MA on March 6, 1916 he was a son of the late Francillo and Grace (Codding) Young.
Merle grew up and was educated in Mansfield and was a graduate of Mansfield High School. A retired Signalman, Mr. Young had worked 30 years for Amtrak prior to retiring in 1980. He had formerly been employed for the Mansfield Municipal Electric Company.
Merle was a member of the Mansfield Congregational Church. His other memberships included being a member of the Brotherhood of Railroad Signalman and was a former member of the Mansfield Fish & Game Club.
An avid sports enthusiast, baseball and hockey being his favorites, Mr. Young was a former Mansfield Little League Coach and was a founding member of the Mansfield Men’s Softball League.
Merle’s hobbies included working in his yard, feeding the birds that visited his home and playing cribbage. He loved hanging out at the Mansfield Airport and was an ardent supporter of the Mansfield Animal Shelter.
He is survived by his devoted children Rachel E. Young-Jordan and her husband Butch of Rhode Island, Charles M. Young of Alaska, Rene L. Poczatek and her husband Michael of Florida, Richard J. Young and his wife Elaine of Plainville, Thomas E. Young of North Attleboro and Timothy M. Young of Mansfield. The Brother of Frank Young of Plympton and the late Selwyn Young, Merle is also survived by his loving 15 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren, 4 great- great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Graveside funeral services, to which relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend, will be held on Thursday August 19th at 11:00 A.M. at the Spring Brook Cemetery in Mansfield. Burial will follow.
Visiting hours have been omitted and in lieu of flowers, Merle’s family has requested that donations in his memory be made to the Mansfield Animal Shelter P.O. Box 25 Mansfield, MA 02048.
