Obituary

LCDR USN RET. Darryl M. Williams, 62, passed away on Friday, Aug. 13, 2010, at the Fairview Convalescent Center, surrounded by his family and friends after a courageous battle with liver cancer.

Darryl is survived by his wife of 40 years, Susan (Martel) Williams; their son, Eric J. Williams and his wife, Teri Williams; and four nieces and two nephews, Edith Samples, Scott Williams, Debbie Rodowitz, Cindy Johnson, Todd Williams, and Marie Roullard, and their families.

Darryl was born in New London, the youngest of three sons of Elmer “Buster” and Madeline (Arnold) Williams. Darryl grew up in Mystic completed his high school education at Stonington High School in 1967 and continued his higher education at St. Joseph School of Nursing in Providence, graduating in 1971. He married Susan Martel in April 1970 at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Mystic. He joined the U.S. Navy as a nurse traveling to Guam, California, South Carolina, Virginia, and finally retiring after 20 years of service as a lieutenant commander at the U.S. Sub Base in Groton. After retiring from the Navy, he continued to work at the sub base as a civil service registered nurse where he retired in April 2010.

He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. He was active with his church and choir. He enjoyed singing with St. Cecilia Chorus under the direction of Godfrey Tomanek for more than ten years.

Calling hours are at the Dinoto Funeral Home, 17 Pearl Street in Mystic from 5 to 8 p.m. on Monday. There will be a service with military honors at Bishop Seabury Church in Groton at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 17. Burial will be private.
