Obituary

Captain Robert D. Young, 81, of Powder Springs, formerly of Tifton, died Sunday, August 15, 2010, after a prolonged illness. Graveside funeral services will be held at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, August 19, 2010, in Oak Ridge Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Thursday, August 19, 2010, from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. at Bowen-Donaldson Home for Funerals.

Captain Young was born on November 16, 1928 in Fitzgerald and was the son of William Orvis Young and Mary Lee Clements Young, both deceased. He spent his youthful years in South Georgia and served in the United States Navy on the USS Sicily during the Korean War from July 1950 through May 1954.

During his 36 years in law enforcement, he served 20 years with the Cobb County Sheriff's Office and was formerly employed with the Tifton Police Department. Captain Young served as Shift Commander at the Cobb County Detention Center, responsible for over 900 inmates and detention center operations. He attended Secret Service School, the FBI Academy and the Georgia Police Academy. He was also a member of the Georgia Sheriff's Association, the Georgia Chapter of the Police Officer's Association and the Cobb County Retired Employees Association.

Captain Young is survived by his wife, Marjorie Lewis Young of Powder Springs; three sons, Victor Alan Young, Travis Daniel Young and Milton Scott Young; one step-daughter, Elizabeth Macneal Patterson; five grandchildren, Robert Alan Young, Toni Rene Young, Mathew Young, Mason Young and Austin Young; four great-grandchildren; two step-brothers; and one sister-in-law, Jeanette Young.
