Obituary

Ruth Denise Thomas, age 57, of 4 Ephraims Path, passed away Thursday, Aug. 5, 2010, on the Mashantucket Pequot Reservation.

She was born Aug. 17, 1952, in New York, N.Y., the daughter of the late Joseph Carter Sr. and the late Phyllis (Waite) Carter.

In 1970, she was married to Albert Irving Thomas, who predeceased her.

She was employed by the Mashantucket Pequot Tribe as the Tribal manager and also held positions as the director of the housing authority and the secretary/treasurer for the Mashantucket Tribal Council in the past.

She is survived by her children, Michael Thomas, Michelle Thomas-Kilgore, Steven Thomas, and Allan Thomas; by her brothers and sisters, Joseph Carter Jr., Gary Carter Sr., Patricia Charity, Keri Spears, Maxine Carter; by her step brothers and sisters, William Monroe, Steven Monroe, Ellen Rivera, and Charles Monroe; and by her 12 grandchildren.

In addition to her husband and parents, Ruth was predeceased by her brother, Keith Robinson; stepbrother, Dennis Monroe; as well as a nephew, Timber Spears.

Ruth's whole life focused around those that she loved; her family, the Mashantucket Tribe, and her religion. Before and after she came to Mashantucket, she served as a community organizer. She was one of Jehovah's Witnesses. She was baptized on Aug. 21, 2004.

A noon funeral service will be held on Tuesday, Aug. 10, 2010, at the Mashantucket Pequot Spiritual Center, 938 Shewville Road. Calling hours will be held from 10:30 a.m. until the time of the service. Burial will follow in the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Burial Ground.

Florists should deliver all flowers directly to the Spiritual Center no later than 10am on Monday.
