Obituary

Lionel S. "Leo" Amaral, 89, of Dartmouth died July 24, 2010 at St. Luke's Hospital following a lengthy illness.
He was the beloved husband of Dorothy (St. Pierre) Amaral, to whom he was married for 62 years.
Born in New Bedford on May 14, 1921, the son of the late Francisco and Estephania (Rose) Amaral, he lived in New Bedford and Dartmouth all of his life.
He was formerly employed by the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company for 41 years and kept in touch with his "work buddies" as a member of the Goodyear Seniors Club. Traveling was his passion, and while able, he traveled extensively.
Leo served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the 196th Field Artillery Battalion , landing overseas on Omaha Beach, and serving his country in England, France, Belgium, Germany and Czechoslovakia. He was a member of the Portuguese American War Veterans and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Poirier Post 3260.
Survivors include his wife, Dorothy; his daughter, Susan Gonzalski and her husband Stephen, of Pennsylvania; two sisters, Hortense Amaral and Lorraine Travers, both of New Bedford; one grandson; James Gonzalski of College Park, MD.

He was the brother of the late Gilbert Amaral, Edwina Sousa and Lucille Duarte.
His Funeral Service will be held on Wednesday, July 28th at 10 AM in the Saunders-Dwyer Home For Funerals, 495 Park St. New Bedford. Burial will follow in Rural Cemetery. Visiting hours Tuesday, July 27th from 4-8 PM.
