Leahy, David J., age 89, a lifelong resident of Haverhill, died Wednesday morning, March 26, 2008 at Hannah Duston Healthcare Center, Haverhill.
Mr. Leahy was born in Haverhill on January 31, 1919, the son of the late Daniel D. and Nora (Murphy) Leahy, both of Ireland. He was educated in St. James School, and attended St. James High School, Haverhill.
He joined the U.S. Navy during World War II and served in the Pacific from 1942-46. Following active duty he joined the U.S. Naval Reserves for several years. Mr. Leahy was employed by the former Western Electric, Co., No. Andover, retiring in the 1980's after many years of service. He was a member of the Haverhill Country Club, Haverhill, where he was at one time the oldest member still golfing. He was also a member of St. James Church, Haverhill. He was an avid and accomplished golfer, playing courses throughout Massachusetts and New England; he enjoyed playing cards at the Country Club, more importantly, he enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, especially his youngest brother, Dan.
He is survived by his brother, Daniel J. Leahy of Haverhill; his good companion, Kitty; and several nieces and nephews. One of eight children, he was the brother of the late Elizabeth Arsenault, Margaret Fickett, Rita Kennedy, Catherine Brown, Martin Leahy, and Anna Checovich.
Funeral service will be held graveside at the Leahy family lot in St. James Cemetery, Primrose Street, Haverhill, on Tuesday, June 3 at 11:30 a.m. Contributions in David's memory may be made to the Sisters of St. Joseph Association, P.O. Box 104, Merrimac, MA 01860.
