Obituary

Young, Barbara A. (Coughlin), age 71 of Bradford, died Wednesday, May 21, 2008 in Bradford.

She was born in Haverhill on August 28, 1936, the daughter of the late John F. and Teresa E. (Dawkins) Coughlin. Mrs. Young was educated in Haverhill, having been graduated from Sacred Hearts Grammar School in 1950 and Haverhill High School in 1954. She then attended The Salem Hospital School of Nursing, where she was graduated in 1957.

She worked as a Registered Nurse at the former Hale Hospital, Haverhill, for 38 years, and had been the Nursing Supervisor of the Emergency and the Outpatient Departments for twenty years until her retirement in 1998. She was a member of the Salem Hospital School of Nursing Alumni Association; the Massachusetts Nurses Association; the American Nurses Association; and the Emergency Nurses Association. In 1997 she was the Merrimack Valley Nurse of the Year, and she also had been inducted into the Academy of Women of the YWCA.

Mrs. Young was a member of Sacred Hearts Parish in Bradford; she volunteered for the Haverhill YWCA, having planned several fundraisers throughout the years; and was Chairperson for the Tribute for Women in 2002 and, most recently, in 2008. She was also a member of the Board of Directors of the Bradford Swim Club. In addition to her civic obligations she enjoyed spending time with her family and friends, and she had traveled during life extensively, always ending at a beach.

She is survived by her loving husband Ernest V. Young, Jr. of Bradford, with whom she recently celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary; loving children, including her daughter and son in-law Dr. Cheryl A. and Dr. William J. Ennis of Nashua, NH; sons and daughters in-law Michael P. Young and Catherine J. Cantwell of Bradford, and Brian K. and Rosanna Young of Franklin, MA; sister and brother in-law Elaine M. and Angelo Diodati of Bradford; and brothers and sisters-in-law John F. and Joan F. Coughlin of Salisbury, William R. and Ann Coughlin of Groveland, and John and Jeanne Houle of Haverhill; five loving grandchildren, Rosmin, Nola, and Nathaniel Ennis and Alexandra and Riley Young; also several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, May 27, 2008 in the C. Frank Linnehan and Son Bradford Funeral Home, 52 Salem Street, Bradford at 10:00 a.m. Funeral Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in Sacred Hearts Church, 165 So. Main Street, Bradford, at 11:00 a.m. Burial will follow in Elmwood Cemetery, Salem Street, Bradford. Calling hours Monday, 4:00-8:00 p.m. Relatives and friends invited.
