Obituary

Marilyn Flood died July 14 2010, after a valiant fight with cancer. A longtime resident of Mattapoisett, she was born and raised in the Somerville/Belmont area, living in Maine, Connecticut, and returning to Massachusetts in 1968.
Losing her parents at a young age, she was quite close to her aunt and uncle, Mary and Charlie Adams. Marilyn attended the University of Massachusetts, majoring in Spanish and Home Economics. Married to Nathan Flood in 1959, they raised two sons, Richard and Ken, with Marilyn teaching at several local schools. Her passions were spending time with family and friends, gardening, and finding ways to assist numerous local community groups. Among these groups were the Mattapoisett Women's Club, the Mattapoisett Garden Club, Mattapoisett Land Trust, Friends of the Elderly, First Unitarian Church of New Bedford, Coalition for Buzzards Bay, the Father Damien's Family Pantry, Womens Alliance, and the Mattapoisett Historical Society. In addition, she was one of the founders of the Mattapoisett Curbside Recycling, a cause she strongly supported.
Marilyn's companion was John Layport, recently deceased, of Rochester. She is survived by a son, Ken, his partner Alan, close family friends Lisa Ayotte and Mike Rivard, and several in-laws and their families, all of whom will miss her dearly.
Her Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, September 18, 2010 at 10 AM in the First Unitarian Church, 8th Street, New Bedford, coffee hour to follow. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to one of the above groups, or to your favorite community group.
