Michael A. Noonan , 70, of Derry, NH, died Friday July 9, 2010 in Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Boston, MA. He was born in New York City, NY on January 22, 1940, a son of the late Edwin and Sheila (McAuliffe) Noonan. Mr. Noonan grew up in the Inwood neighborhood of Upper Manhattan and served in the US Army from 1959 until 1961. He graduated from St. Joseph's Seminary in New York and was ordained as a priest by the archdiocese of New York. He served many churches, the last being St. Catherine's of Genoa. He choose to leave the active ministry and marry Mary Elizabeth Montore in 1973 and later start a family. In 1980, he received his PhD from St. John's University in New York and a year later moved to New Hampshire settling in Derry. For nearly 30 years, Mr. Noonan worked as a psychologist in Northern MA, Southern NH and parts of Vermont, most recently working for the Rochester Public Schools in Rochester, NH. He began volunteering in recent years at the New Horizons for NH Soup Kitchen on weekends, something that became very dear to his heart. He was an avid reader and writer, loved nature and was a big fan of the Boston Red Sox. He was predeceased by his wife Mary Elizabeth Noonan in 1985.
He is survived by his three sons, James Noonan of Boston, MA, John Noonan of Chicago, IL, Matthew Gunzelmann of Hampton, NH, one brother, Robert Noonan of East Stroudsburg, PA, many nieces and nephews.
Calling hours were held on Tuesday July 13, 2010 from 5 - 8pm at the Peabody Funeral Homes and Crematorium, 15 Birch Street, Derry. A graveside service was held on Wednesday at 11:30am at Holy Cross Cemetery, Gilcreast Road, Londonderry. A memorial service was held on Wednesday at 1:00pm at First Parish Congregational Church, East Derry Road, East Derry. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the New Horizons for New Hampshire Soup Kitchen, PO Box 691, Manchester, NH 03105 or to Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, 330 Brookline Avenue (BR), Boston, MA 02215 (earmarked for the Neuro Science center).
