Obituary

MAYSVILLE, NC: Howard W. Anderson, 78, formerly of Derby Street, died June 30, 2010 in New Bern, North Carolina. He was the husband of the late Eleanor F. (Boris) Anderson, who died in January of 2000.
Born in Melrose on April 19, 1932, he was the son of the late Edward E. and Florence E. (Blanchard) Anderson.
A U.S. Air Force veteran of the Korean War, he served from December of 1950 and was honorably discharged in December of 1954.
Howard was employed for the Market Forge Company in Everett for forty years before retiring in 1994 to attend to his wife’s medical needs.
An excellent softball player, he was a member of various leagues in Gloucester throughout the 1970’s and 1980’s. He was known for his “knuckleball” and had the great fortune to enter into many tournaments with his friend, the late Thomas Moses. An avid golfer, he also enjoyed yearly trips to Myrtle Beach with his friends.
He thoroughly enjoyed traveling with his family and friends across the fifty states and never let his declining health interfere with his plans. Howard loved to watch and cheer on his grandchildren throughout their sporting events. He was also blessed with the tremendous opportunity of visiting Cooperstown to watch them play in tournaments.
He is survived by his four sons and three daughters-in-law, Edwin and Gina Anderson of Kailua, Hawaii, William Anderson of Gloucester, Robert and Elizabeth Anderson of Essex, Peter and Gina Anderson of Gloucester, four grandchildren, Brian W., Scott E., and Mark R. Anderson all of Gloucester and Stephen Anderson of Kailua, HI. He also leaves his sisters, Ruth Camille of Jacksonville, FL and Marjorie Ashcroft of Middleborough and many nieces, nephews and dear friends in Massachusetts and Maysville, North Carolina. He was deeply touched by his friends in Maysville, who took the role of his caregivers, Edward and Linda Butler. He was also predeceased by his brother, Robert Calvary and sister, Dorothy Caulk.
His funeral service will be held on Wednesday afternoon in the Seaside Cemetery, Lanesville at 2 p.m. Visiting hours will be held on Tuesday evening in the Pike-Grondin Funeral Home, 61 Middle Street, Gloucester from 4 – 7 p.m. Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend.
