Obituary

EVANS-Mr. E.E. Neely died peacefully in his sleep on Sunday morning, June 27, 2010, with his wife of 66 years by his side.

A service of remembrance will be held at 2:00 PM on Thursday, July 1, 2010 at Reid memorial Presbyterian Church with Dr. Leslie Holmes and Rev. Paul Sherwood officiating. Following the service, the family will receive friends in the Fellowship Hall. Mr. Neely served as a deacon and elder at Reid Memorial, where he was an active and contributing member for over 40 years. He will rest in the columbarium at his church.

Mr. Neely was the first in his family to earn a college degree, graduating from North Texas University in 1942. He then served as a naval officer in the Pacific Theater during World War II. He returned home to make his career as a chemist. That work brought him to Augusta in 1965, where he managed the Quality Control Lab at DSM. On retiring, he launched his second successful career as a dealer in English and American antiques. He was an avid reader and world traveler, and a devoted husband, father, grandfather and friend.

He is survived by his wife, Bette, his daughter Claudia, his son Steve, and daughter in law Diane. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Nathan and Sibyl Schmidt of Tokyo, Japan, Amy and Adam Burt of Seattle, Washington, Daniel and Pua Schmidt of Pottstown, Pennsylvania and Kim Neely of Boulder, Colorado, as well as one great granddaughter, Daphne Schmidt.
