Obituary

GLOUCESTER: Jay W. “Smokey” Favazza, 50, of 9 Trask Street died suddenly on Friday, June 25, 2010. He was the husband of Linda M. (Laurie) Favazza. They had shared twenty-three years together.
Born in Gloucester on January 22, 1960, he was the son of the late Donny Favazza and Jean (Doucette) Favazza Parisi and stepson of the late Ambrose “Cons” Parisi. He was a lifelong resident of Gloucester and a graduate of the Gloucester High School class of 1978, where he played baseball for the Fishermen.
Jay had been employed at various companies including Gorton’s of Gloucester, Thermet, B.F. Goodrich and M & J Painting. He was currently a cab driver for Gloucester Taxi.
A member of the Sunday Morning Softball League since he was fourteen years old, he played for Uncle Moe’s, where he earned his nickname “Smokey” from the late Tommy Moses. He had also played in the Night League, but due to a back injury, he stopped playing and began umpiring for the Sunday Morning League, which he continued for several years.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by four children, Jayson Favazza, Jessyka Favazza, Christian “CJ” Favazza and Michael Marino, companion of Jami Kolodzik, and a grandson whom he adored, Michael D. Marino. Among his many in-laws, he leaves two special brothers-in-law, John “Jackie” Laurie and John Naves, several nieces and nephews, cousins, including a very dear cousin, Sherry Doucette and among many close friends, he leaves his lifelong friend, Bobby Provost. He was also predeceased by his brother, Kevin Favazza and his mother-in-law and father-in-law, Mary (Spanks) and Donald “Duck” Laurie.
His funeral service will be held on Thursday morning in the Mt. Pleasant Cemetery at 9:30 a.m. Visiting hours will be held today in the Pike-Grondin Funeral Home, 61 Middle Street, Gloucester from 4 – 8 p.m. Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend.
