Obituary

Mrs. Dorothy Thompson Ray

Augusta, GA – Mrs. Dorothy Thompson Ray, beloved wife of the late John DeWitt Ray, Sr. entered into rest on Tuesday, May 18, 2010 at University Hospital.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Thursday, May 20, 2010 at Platt’s Crawford Avenue Chapel with the Rev. J.F. Rodgers officiating. Interment to follow at Hillcrest Memorial Park.

Mother was a lifelong resident of Augusta and was a member of Pauline Gospel Church for 57 years. In the 1960’s, Mother started selling insurance. She excelled in this and won trips around the world for her and Daddy. Many times you would drive around and see Mother’s picture on the billboards around Augusta as “Agent of the Year” or “Agent of the Month”. She loved people and never met a stranger. Alzheimer’s could not take away her sweet spirit, generosity to others, and the love of her family and her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. She spread sunshine wherever she would go. How much she will be missed!

Survivors include her son, John DeWitt Ray, Jr. of Mebane, NC; her three daughters, Bonnie Ray Rowe of Evans, Shirley Ray Woodham of Cobb, GA, and Elaine Ray Cushman and husband Carl of Evans; her eleven grandchildren, Ben Ray Waters, Steve Waters, A. Donald Waters, Jr., Kimberly Manders, Ronald Woodham, Jr., Gina Ray Arledge, Dori Ray, John D. Ray, III, Clay Cushman, Brandon Cushman, and Tony Lever; twenty two great grandchildren, eight great-great grandchildren, two adopted daughters, Pat Rogers of Evans, Margaret Hogue of Grovetown, special caregiver, Fran Deason (Glenda) and several nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Ray was preceded in death by her parents, Willie Dean and Julia Tyson Thompson; her brothers, Alvin Thompson, Wylie Thompson and wife Alene, Remus Thompson and wife Mattie Lou, and Felton Thompson and wife Peggy; her sisters, Bessie Mae Thompson, and Allie Bell Wells and husband Willie.

Active pallbearers will be Mrs. Ray’s grandsons. Honorary pallbearers will be Mrs. Ray’s great-grandsons.

If so desired memorials may be made in Mrs. Ray’s honor to a charity of one’s choice.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Wednesday, May 19 2010 from 6:00 to 9:00 PM.
